Never Trump traitor Mitt Romney betrayed the President with a vote to convict the President on one of the Democrats articles of impeachment.
But that was just the tip of the ice berg for Romney’s plan for revenge on Trump.
And you won’t believe what Mitt Romney will do to Trump in 2020.
Mitt Romney was one of two Republicans to vote for additional witnesses in the Senate impeachment trial.
51 Republicans banded together to defeat Romney and the Democrats’ scheme to extend the witch hunt for weeks and possibly months with new witness testimony headlined by former National Security Advisor John Bolton.
Some Trump supporters believed Romney wanted to haul Bolton in front of the Senate even though Romney knew it wouldn’t change the outcome of the trial – the Senate would still acquit the President – but because Romney hoped it would cripple the President’s re-election campaign.
Democrats and Romney hoped that more witness testimony would create pressure for a handful of Republicans to vote to convict the President.
A majority of the Senate voting to convict the President – even if it fell short of the two thirds majority necessary to remove Trump from office – would scuttle any chance of the President claiming exoneration heading into the 2020 campaign.
In a story for the Washington Examiner, political reporter David Drucker relayed the thoughts of a Republican strategist that did not have any connections to either Trump or Romney.
The strategist told Drucker that Romney was scheming to see Trump defeated in November so Romney could lead a revival of the pro-open borders, pro-globalist brand of Republicanism that Romney and John McCain epitomized.
The Washington Examiner exclusively reports:
A second Republican strategist neither affiliated with nor opposed to Trump agreed that Romney’s maneuvering during the four-month impeachment process was calculated. This veteran operative predicted the senator would be active after the November elections, trying to restore the internationalist, “Chamber of Commerce” Republicanism that dominated the GOP before the elevation of Trump, a populist and a nationalist.
“He is cynically betting on an electoral disaster in 2020,” this Republican said, requesting anonymity in order to speak candidly and preserve relationships with key establishment figures. “I think he believes he will be the only guy who will look like he was in the right on the road to hell.”
There were also whispers around Washington that Romney voted for witnesses in impeachment to position himself as the anti-Trump candidate for a third White House bid in 2024.
Drucker – however – reported that sources close to Romney told him Romney’s days as a Presidential candidate were over.
The Washington Examiner also exclusively reports:
Although some Republicans believe Romney ran for the Senate as a steppingstone to a third act in presidential politics, GOP insiders who know him well and still talk to him say his decision to run for Senate signaled the exact opposite. They also believe that Romney understands that the center of gravity in the Republican Party has shifted away from his brand of politics.
“He knows that chance has passed and the party has moved in a different direction,” a former Romney adviser said.
What desires for treason and sabotage truly lay in Romney’s heart?
President Trump and his supporters will find those out in the coming months.
