Kamala Harris entered the second Democrat Presidential debate rising into the top tier.
But then something happened that no one saw coming.
And Kamala Harris’ world collapsed before her very eyes after this implosion.
High off of her big debate win in the first round of debates weeks ago, Sen. Kamala Harris has been soaring in the polls.
She moved from close to the bottom of the pack of candidates to become former Vice President Joe Biden’s most formidable opponent.
Harris used her time at the debate to directly challenge Biden’s shaky history of race relations.
On top of a series of insensitive comments, including his praising of segregationists, Harris took him to task over his one-time opposition to de-segregating school buses.
Harris told a tear-jerking story about being a little girl attending one of the first schools to de-segregate buses.
That moment is the highest point of her campaign.
But in the most recent debate, one of her challengers zeroed in to give her the lowest point of her campaign so far.
During a discussion about criminal justice reform, Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard hammered Harris on her history as a federal prosecutor.
Gabbard points out that while she is talking a big game about her support of criminal justice reform, her record as prosecutor doesn’t reflect her statements.
“Senator Harris says she’s proud of her record as a prosecutor and that she’ll be a prosecutor president. But I’m deeply concerned about this record,” Gabbard declared before going into detail with a number of examples.
Gabbard first goes into her record of jailing more than 1,500 people for marijuana charges:
“There are too many examples to cite but she put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.”
She also points out that Harris “blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row until the courts forced her to do so.”
This is a claim that the Sacramento Bee fact-checked, and said is accurate, writing:
“Gabbard is correct that Harris did not pursue all evidence in the case she referenced, but the innocence of the inmate in question has yet to be determined.”
To finish off her attack on Harris, Gabbard said that she “kept people in prison beyond their sentences to use them as cheap labor for the state of California.”
This attack is clearly the most devastating Harris has faced.
Following the debate, Tulsi Gabbard was the most-searched candidate on Google, with this moment being the most memorable.
And after the debate, Harris took a lot of questions about Gabbard’s attack.
Instead of responding to the criticism, she first put her focus on denigrating Gabbard, saying that it isn’t surprising that somebody who is at “0 or 1%” like Gabbard would target her, a “top-tier candidate.”
It is clear that Harris didn’t expect such a harsh attack.
But she should be very concerned, considering how quickly she moved up in the polls because of just one debate question.
