Jeff Sessions is trying to win back his old Senate seat.
But first he has to escape the GOP primary.
And Jeff Sessions heard the word from Trump that everyone knew that spelled doom.
In the Alabama Republican Senate primary, Jeff Sessions and former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville advanced to a March 31 runoff to determine who would take on incumbent Democrat Doug Jones.
Tuberville won 33 percent of the vote compared to 32 percent for Sessions.
The former Auburn football coach celebrated the results with his supporters at an election watch event.
Tuberville told the crowd that finishing ahead of Sessions was a win for outsiders against the swamp.
“Tonight, it looks like a great night for us and a bad night for the swamp,” Tuberville told the crowd at his primary night party. “We’re going to overtime and I know somebody that knows how to win in overtime.”
Tuberville tried to focus upcoming runoff as a referendum on President Trump firing Sessions for disloyalty.
“We’re going to finish what President Trump started when he looked at Jeff Sessions from across the table and said, ‘You’re fired,’” Tuberville exclaimed.
For his part, Sessions sought to cast himself as the one true Trump supporter in the race.
“Where was he when President Trump needed him?” Sessions declared. “What did he do for Trump? Never said a kind word about him that I can find. Never gave a single penny of his millions to the Trump campaign. So one thing is clear. There is no doubt where I stand on the issues [and] no doubt of my support for Donald Trump and his agenda.”
Sessions’ task became more difficult the morning after the primary.
Donald Trump tweeted that Sessions scrambling for survival in a runoff was all due to Sessions caving in to Deep State and fake news media pressure and recusing himself from the Russia collusion investigation.
The President tweeted, “This is what happens to someone who loyally gets appointed Attorney General of the United States & then doesn’t have the wisdom or courage to stare down & end the phony Russia Witch Hunt. Recuses himself on FIRST DAY in office, and the Mueller Scam begins!”
The evidence backs up the President’s claim.
Sessions represented Alabama in the Senate from 1997 to 2017.
In his last election in 2014, Sessions ran unopposed as the Democrat Party did not even field an official candidate.
Sessions squandered that goodwill by folding to the Deep State which allowed the Robert Mueller witch hunt to run wild for over two years.
Trump’s tweet will make it difficult for Sessions to win back skeptical voters that want a Republican Senator that supports the President.
And if President Trump goes even further and endorses Tuberville then that will be the final nail in the coffin for Sessions.
